“The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain. It's the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared.” Should memories be shared with the citizens despite how bad they may be?
I think that memories should be shared with the community because it would help them have a better understanding in why their community has such a state of sameness and why the elders choose for them their roles in the community.I also think that memories may not always be good but the bad ones remain with us even longer, because we learn from them and dont make the same mistake twice
I completely agree with Kerlyn because the people of the community do not understand why they have to follow the rules that they follow. And that they should be given the oppirtunity to have this understanding just as the receivers of memory. ~Meekalys Louis
Contrary to my belief before we discussed the book,I do not think that memories should be shared with the citizens despite how bad they may be.We observed in the novel what happens when something strikes fear or uncertainty in the lives of the citizens when the pilot flew very close over the city. The people of the community were fearful as to what was happening and this caused a sense of chaos.I think that exposing the people of the community to this amount of pain and loneliness will just cause a lot of unneeded problems in the society.I do no believe that the people of the community will have an immediate understanding to what is going on and as a result they may turn to unwanted solutions to get rid of the emotions they might feel when they are exposed to these memories. The community members would end up feeling another foreign emotion;depression, or even worse they might apply for release. So despite of how bad these memories may seem it is easier, safer and less chaotic for there to be a chosen receiver of memories, and for everyone else to stay unaware of these memories.
I completely agree to what Kimani is saying I think that exposing the people of the community to this amount of pain and loneliness will just cause a lot of unneeded problems in the society.
I agree with Kimani's opinion because unleashing those problems into the minds of those in the community would cause many issues because it would raise a lot of confusion and disaster in the community. People would question these memories and cause quite a lot of conflict. ~Aiyanah Commodore
I disagree with Kimani because when going through a tough situation the thought that there are people worst than you can make ne feel better about themselves, when you are in history class and the topic about slavery comes up you like to talk about the matter, but without the memories and stories of our ancestors and historians we wouldn't know and I think every one should have a right to the past so that they can make better choices.
I do not agree with your opinion because when jonas felt the sunshine for the first time it was describe as pleasurable and comforting. It would be great if the rest of the community got to have this feeling as well, they would get to experience something different
I agree with what kimani is saying here because the community would run better without the citizens having memories and their would be no chaos or pain or loneliness in the society.
I believe that the memories should be shared to the rest of the community because the people should have the previllage to have them and to not be controlled. It will also help them understand why the community is the way it is.
Yes,i believe that memories should be shared with the people no matter hiw bad they are because the people of the community have the right to know.Even though the Council of Elders may think that it will cause chaos, which it most likely will, there need to be proper laws put on place to guide the people. For example they will still take the pills for the stirrings.Another example is that in Jonas we saw that he too realized that this is wrong and that the people should be set free. The point that I am trying to make with this example is that not all the receivers will have the same mentality nd agree wih the rules. ~Meekalys Louis
I agree with Meekaylis because the people are following rules and they dont know why exactly they must follow these rules whereas if they had memories of the past life they would know why it is that they follow these rules and that instead of experiencing sameness they would experience love and happiness
I believe that memories should not be shared with the members of the community. As mentioned in the novel, a Receiver is to be chosen every ten years or so to receive past memories of what the community was before. In choosing a receiver, the elders observe a person who showcases a certain five qualities which will allow them to qualify for that said position. Courage is one of those qualities; not everyone in the community has the courage to receive all of those memories. Although there are good memories, there are also painful, heartbreaking, and sorrowful memories. If these memories are given to the community, there would be too much chaos. When the pilot flew over the community in the beginning of the book, the community went into a full state of shock and panic. Imagine giving the community all of those memories, especially the ones of pain and sorrow, they would lose their minds completely causing disorder in the community. Also, the weight of the memories would be too much for the people of the community to bear. In the novel, the Giver mentions that the memories were weighing him down, which indicated that they were a lot to carry. Not everyone in the community would be able to carry all of the memories around, because of the amount there is. These memories are pulled from generations and generations back, which makes it quite a heavy load. I think that it is best if the memories are kept back from the community, so that there is more peace and less chaos. Everyone is not equipped to receive memories.
I understand Aiyanah's point of view. However I do not believe that one person should have to be burdened with such an assignment as receiver of memory and not be able to talk about it.
I disagree. The memories burden the giver because he is one person, if everybody in the community had the memories then they could help each other carry those burdens so they would be much lighter to carry. Also, I think you have focused too much on there being bad memories, let us remember that with memories of depression also comes memories of happiness. Why should the community not be allowed to feel love or sunshine or snow just because they are not courageous? Because someone is not courageous does not mean they should not feel things. You also brought up the point of the people being terrified of the plane that flew over the community but imagine if the people had the memories of planes flying over cities or towns, they would be a lot calmer in that situation if they knew about it. That is why the people should receive memories.
I agree with Aiyanah. Especially when she talked about how the weight of the memories would be too much for the people of the community to bear especially the ones of pain and sorrow. Also when she talked about the qualities needed to be a receiver and not everyone has the qualities so it could result in chaos.
I think it should be shared with everyone because that is how their society was before they changed it. They should know how to love and cherish one another instead of saying I enjoy your company. Everybody should know to feel how he feels. -Felisha Birmingham
I believe that memories should be shared with the citizens despite how bad they may be. In the novel, we see how the Giver describes his assignment as the receiver of memory to be very lonely. We also see how it appears that Jonas is going down the same path of loneliness due to his assignment as receiver in training. All these memories whether good or bad should not be burdened by one person. The memories should be held by all the citizens so that they can help each other, since they would be experiencing the same things. In my opinion, if these memories were to be shared with the citizens, a completely new society would be formed. There would be love and all different types of great feelings that would not be strange anymore. Yes there would also have memories of pain, loss or depression but at least it would not be carried by one individual. There would be an entire community of citizens sharing the memories together, instead of the Giver or Jonas having to live a life distant from the other citizens just to keep a community perfect. But is is a community truly perfect if it sheilds its citizens from experiencing these memories and leaving it to one person to suffer? As the above quote states "memories need to be shared."
Memories are meant to be shared even if they are bad, it helps us cope with whatever feelings we experience. One person holding all the memories in the world is a very lonely task and it burdens that person so much that they may even want to apply for release, but if those memories were shared then everyone could understand and use that knowledge to help each other to deal with all the pain. We see that when the Giver starts sharing the painful memories with Jonas that he becomes less burdened and it would work the same way with the citizens. If the people were given the memories they would understand as we do that every bad thing has a good side so they would gain wisdom and be cautious with time. They could use this wisdom to make more cautious decisions; maybe Caleb would not have been lost if his parents had the memory of drowning and did not leave him unattended. Bombarding the people with these memories would not work, as we see with the people abruptly receiving Rosemary's memories when she was released it causes chaos, but slowly introducing the memories could create a structured, understanding and emoting community. The memories would help the citizens truly appreciate their rules, lives and technologies. -Adeola Xavier
Memories can have both a negative or positive impact on an individual. Having memories allows us to learn from our memories made in the past and give us a sense of contentment. The memory of sunshine given to Jonas was both pleasant and unpleasant in that it provided a feeling of warmth and an unpleasant effect of sunburn. Now one can argue that if he maintains that memory of sunshine he can take measures to prevent or reduce sunburn.Memories can also be painful and may bring about agony.Like for example when Jonas learnt what warfare meant, he received a feeling of loneliness, being wounded and the remembrance of death.Memories like these can have a long lasting effect on an individual.Overall i can say that i equally both agree and disagree on the given question
memories should be shared with community because everyone opinions matter and i believe that the citizens would enjoy having holidays, time for themselves etc. Despite the fact that it might have a bad effect due to the world we live in, we all fill the need to be empowered and we as human being need to let others have memories and feelings and they matter to and we usually don't do something wrong twice and we all like to think of something to make us happy when we are in a dark place.
I think that the memories should be shared with the citizens despite how bad they may be. In the novel the position of the receiver of memories Is described as lonely by the giver. Instead of the memories being burdened by one person it should be shared by the entire community so that everyone would be going through the same things and no one will feel distant. In my opinion All memories need to be shared so that the community will be able to experience memories of love and other feelings. There would also be memories of pain but at least everyone in the community will be able to help each other.
Yes,I think that memories should be shared with the citizens despite how bad they may be. I say this because I think that everyone in the community has at least one of the qualities that the receiver of memories must have and that even thought there are some bad memories that may lead to depression, sadness etc, sharing the memories can help the people of the community to be more understanding and can lead them to be closer to each other. Although there are some bad memories I think that the citizens can use their good ones to help them feel better for example when Jonas was given the memory of war and then he was given the memory of Christmas. So instead of just the receiver of memory receiving memories and feeling lonely since he can't share them, everyone should have to ability to have memories whether good or bad and be able to share it. Although sharing memories could cause chaos,it could also be a good thing in the sense the the citizens could know of their past so that mistakes won't be repated and etc. ~Julissa Baron
I kind of get where you're coming from but you may be forgetting that in the previous selection Rosemary could not bear with the awful truth about the world and applied for release and Jonas could not bear and ran away. These people who were supposedly the best to reserve the title of 'The Receiver of Memory' along with the memories could not handle their depression, loneliness etc. what makes you think that other people can. No amount of happy memories can erase or belittle the truly harsh and ugly reality of what was their world. I at least believe that no amount of Christmas or ice cream or party memories an erase the impacting and terrible fact that children are starved, exploited, raped and kidnapped, animals are being killed, turned into fur, leather, decoration, people are being discriminated against, killed because of this race, religion and opinions. It doesn't erase the fact that our world is truly, definitely, incredibly messed up. The government in the book is trying to prevent and eliminate all these problems and issues and if hiding the truth from the community is their way of doing it and it has worked so far why stop, why now?
I personally think that memories should be shared with the citizens of the community because everyone should be given the opportunity to better understand why these roles are chosen in particular for them by the elder as well as why their community under go these certain rules and punishments. Another reason why I think the memories are to be shared with everyone is so that they can all experience both the good and bad in their community. Yes the bad memories could cause problems but it will not only teach but allow them to learn from their mistakes.
I do not agree with Zahra's opinion because uncontrolled sharing memories with the community can cause unwanted havoc in the society as we saw with Rosemary. The memory sharing should be controlled and as such a select few op people should know about these memories.
Yes, I think memories should be shared with the citizens despite how bad they may be because I believe it can bring a sense of joy to the community for example, look at how happy Jonas was when he experienced Christmas, he was full of excitement when he was on the sledge. Also, with the rest of the community having memories they will know what it is like to feel the different emotions such as love instead of hearing phrases like "I enjoy your company". In addition to, having the memories will make the people aware of why having two children in each family is permitted and the reason being to prevent poverty and hunger in the community. The people should be able to have the memories to see the different colors so they can see things in a more vivid manner. All the reasons are why the memories should be shared with the citizens despite how bad they may be.
Memories should not be shared with the citizens of the community. In chapter 14 Jonas asks why he should receive and hold on to all these memories. The Giver says that it gives us wisdom and that without wisdom he could not fulfil his function of advising the Committee of Elders when they call upon him. Later on in the same chapter Jonas and the Giver have a conversation about why everyone can't have the memories. After the receiver asks why everyone can't have the memories adding his opinion that it would seem a little easier if the momoeries were shared, and they wouldn't have to bear so much by themselves if everybody had a part. The Giver then goes on to explain that everyone would be burdened and pained. And they don't want that. And that's why the reiciver is so vital and honoured.
I think that if these memories were to get out, everyone would have a better understanding of the world. This could defeat the whole purpose of the "Perfect " lifestyle that they are trying to achieve. It is also more likely than not that the people will change after understanding this all. Some may revert to the old ways and see the totalitarian system as 'wrong'. It also defeats the whole purpose of the receiver and giver relationship. In conclusion, I think that the memories should not be shared with the citizens in order to keep the feelings of lonliness and fear etc. away, to keep the community under control, less problematic, less chaotic and more peaceful.
i think no, the memories should not be shared with the citizens of the community. Lets look at how the citizens responded to the pilot flying very close over the community. They were scared and uncertain of what was happening so those emotions caused a sense of chaos. Now if the memories are to be shared this will cause more than chaos. It will cause the citizens to be hurt, pained and burdened. Just took at how the citizens responded to the pilot and his flying and imagine if the memories had to be exposed especially the very bad ones.i think that the memories are better off with the receiver of memory.
I do not think memories should be shared with the members of the community, whether or not it is impacting or negative. Throughout "The Giver" we have seen what happens when fear and chaos strikes the community in the incident with the pilot who flew too close to the city and also when Jonas' name was skipped when giving assignments. In both scenarios the members of the community panicked and didn't know what to do. If through the memories the community is exposed to death, pain, starvation, killing etc. their reactions will be the same or even worse. This new knowledge will cause a lot of unnecessary and avoidable problems for the community and the council of elders.Through memories the community members will get to both learn and feel emotions, while some may be good and positive like love, joy and happiness, some may be negative like loneliness, depression and disappointment. These negative emotions can decide the community's future and members may go as far as to apply for release. Overall I strongly believe that the memories should not be shared with the community members regardless of their impact.Keeping the memories under raps has been working good for the society so far preventing chaos and confusion.
In my opinion I believe that memories should be shared with the citizens despite how bad they can be for three reasons. The citizens have a right to the truth, their past and their identity. Withholding the memories from them is stealing a vital part of their existence. They should be able to look back at the bad memories and the mistakes that they made so they can advise their children and grandchildren on how they should go about making decisions in life to avoid the same mistakes . The third reason that I believe the memories should be shared is that it is very burdensome for the receiver. I do not believe that the receiver should be given the duty of holding all the memories. It is very tiresome and it makes them age quickly. It also places a heavy weight on their shoulders. As we can see in chapter fifteen the giver is in excruciating pain from all the memories. I find it selfish and inconsiderate of the elders to burden one man with all this pain. With shared memories the individuals in the community will be able to lift a weight of the receiver’s shoulder.
I believe that memories should not be shared with citizens of the society. This is because if memories are shared it will cause chaos in the community. If the citizens were given memories of color then this would bring about racism due to the fact that the citizens can now see each other skin color, hair color and eye color. This would not be good because people may discriminate people that are of different color. Which may cause arguments and fights. If citizens were given memories of feelings and emotions this may cause pain for the citizens like we witnessed how Jonas had pain in the novel when does memories was given to him. For example if the citizens are given the emotion love and the person realizes that they live their family members and a family member were to pass away that person would feel pain. The people of this society are not familiar with emotion so therefore they might not be able to control or handle their emotions. So if someone if the society was experiencing pain that pain may change into anger and the individual might take out their anger on others. Suffering, diseases and gruesome pain is what the people of the community would be feeling if they were exposed to the memories of physical pain. The community may not know how to cope with this sort of pain. The citizens of the society might also want to run away from the community due to the fact that they were exposed to all of this great things and might want to see it for themselves. The memories might also cause altercations amongst the citizens because of all the emotions and pain they are experiencing. A protest might also happen in the community because the citizens might believe that it is unfair that they were stripped from such great knowledge and were not given a choice as to whether they would want the memories or not.
Memories should be shared despit if it is bad or good .In my opinion I think people should have the right to love and express their feelings to someone .In the novel The Giver describes the receiver assignment as lonely .Even if the thoughts are bad and may lead to sadness and making one feel unwanted but this can help the community or society to understand each other better .Memories should also be shared with the citizen to make them know the good and bad that the communtiy has , however it may cause chaos but the communtiy and the citizen should learn from their mistakes and try to fix them .
In my opinion i believe that memories should be shared with the citizens of the community despite how bad they may be. I think that the citizens have a right to know about their past and should have the opportunity to experience the memories like the the reciever of memory does. I also believe that having one person to deal with the bad memories is not fair and it is a burden to have to deal with all the emotions that are caused by the memory. As said in the novel the reciever is a very lonely person. Not being able to share how u feel about certain memories might be very difficult and i believe that if the memories are shared with if not all of the communtiy but some of them it would make the job of the reciever less lonely and difficult. Although bad memories might cause alot of chaos throughout the community i beleive it is an opportunity for them to grow as people and it would give them a better understanding of certain things.
Yes I agree that the citizen should be able to know about the memories because it’s not fair. How would you feel if you didn’t know the truths about life,Terrible right.its also put a lot of pressure on the receiver of memories so if the citizens have memories it wouldn’t stress out the receiver.-Arielle Ford
I think that memories should be shared among people in the community despite how bad it is, and by saying this i mean just look at how rashlt Asher reacted to Jonas even if Jonas did not want bad for him. That only happened because of the prohibition of memories from other citizens in the community, where as if the memories was being shared among citizens of the community, it would enlighten them and Asher therefore could see and understand too, why the game was dangerous. In my opinion I think memories not being shared could could create chaos as well as it being shared, because, the fact that Asher did not have the memory of war and did not know that the game was dangerous, simply created a disagreement between two very close friends Asher and Jonas, where as if asher only had such memories would not only look at the area where he thinks Jonas is trying to spoil his game, but see also it was dangerous and that they should stop, instead of reacting in such a rude manner to his friend for seeing something that he could not.
I don't believe memories should be shared because of the consequences of how bad they maybe. In the novel we see how the painful memories caused Rosemary to apply for release. If these painful memories caused one person to take their life imagine an entire community. Most citizens may not be equipped to handle such memories.i believe that if these memories are shared, it could cause the community the citizens to go into complete chaos.
I think that memories should be shared with the community because it would help them understand why their community is so similar and why the elders choose them for their roles in the community .I also think that memories may not always be good but the bad ones remain with us even longer, because we learn from them and we try our very best not to repeat that same mistake
I think that memories should be shared with the community because it would help them have a better understanding in why their community has such a state of sameness and why the elders choose for them their roles in the community.I also think that memories may not always be good but the bad ones remain with us even longer, because we learn from them and dont make the same mistake twice

Yes,I think that memories should be shared with the citizens despite how bad they may be. Although sharing memories could cause chaos,it could also be a good thing in the sense the the citizens could know of their past so that mistakes won't be repated and etc.

I agree with Julissa’s comment. She made an excellent point when she stated that the citizens can use their good memories to make them feel better.
DeleteI kind of get where you're coming from but you may be forgetting that in the previous selection Rosemary could not bear with the awful truth about the world and applied for release and Jonas could not bear and ran away.

DeleteI agree with this opinion
DeleteI do not agree with Zahra's opinion because uncontrolled sharing memories with the community can cause unwanted havoc in the society as we saw with Rosemary.

ReplyDeletei disagree with this comment because not all the memories are as happy as this one some are bad and will definitely not make them feel love

DeleteMemories should not be shared with the citizens of the community.
ReplyDeleteIn chapter 14 Jonas asks why he should receive and hold on to all these memories.

ReplyDeleteI do not think memories should be shared with the members of the community, whether or not it is impacting or negative.

DeleteI disagree with lianet because the citizens have a right to know about the truth about life - Arielle Ford
DeleteIn my opinion I believe that memories should be shared with the citizens despite how bad they can be for three reasons.
ReplyDeleteThe citizens have a right to the truth, their past and their identity.
I agree with briyanikha cause i think people should have a right to know what their lives are about .

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion i believe that memories should be shared with the citizens of the community despite how bad they may be.

ReplyDeleteI think that memories should be shared among people in the community despite how bad it is, and by saying this i mean just look at how rashlt Asher reacted to Jonas even if Jonas did not want bad for him.

DeleteI don't believe memories should be shared because of the consequences of how bad they maybe.
